Time To Start Wearing A Watch Again

My first watch (at least the first one I remember getting) was a Mickey Mouse watch when I was six. It was black with a white face. Mickey was in the middle and his hands were the hour and minute hands. Something very much like this. From that point on, probably all the way through college or thereabouts I almost always wore a watch.

My dream watch as a kid was a calculator watch. I know, I’m a nerd. I got one of those for Christmas in 1992 or 1993 and loved it. It was one of the black plastic Casio ones with the rubber wrist band like this one. I loved that watch, and eventually upgraded to the fancier version (possibly this one), though I feel like it didn’t last as long. I’m sure there were one or two others in there, but those are the ones that stand out.

Honestly, apart from that Mickey Mouse watch, I think all of my watches were digital. I always thought digital watches were cool growing up. Analog watches just seemed old fashioned to me. Besides, who would want to stare at that esoteric watch face when you could see the time immediately in digital numerals instead?

The problem with digital watches though is that, frankly, they’re not very attractive. Old fashioned or no, analog watches just look way more elegant. I guess I’m just at a point in life where I’m attracted to the aesthetics of a timepiece.

I don’t remember exactly when I stopped wearing a watch. At some point my cell phone became my time piece, as it does for so many people. There’s absolutely nothing wrong with this. In fact, these days we’re practically surrounded by devices that can tell us the time. But there’s nothing like the immediacy of having the time right there on your wrist.

The last watch I bought was a cheap one at Wal-Mart a few years ago. Even then I felt like no digital watch could match the looks of an analog watch, but I was still clinging to the simplicity of digital so compromised with a watch that did both. It was junk and as I recall at least one of the two parts of it stopped working. I may have worn it for a few months.

Well, my friends, I’m finally ready to wear a watch again. I’ve got matching Timex Easy Readers ordered for Lady Jessica and myself, and they should arrive soon. I can’t wait! If you wear a watch, what kind is it and what do you like about it?
